Brian, a former enlisted Marine, became a Naval Supply Corps officer in 2012 and ventured off to start the second half of his career at Direct Commission Officer School in Newport, RI in 2013. I joined the Navy Nurse Corps in 2012 and attended the same class of Direct Commission Officer School. Ring true the old adage: “If the military wanted you to have a significant other, they would have issued you one”. Several months later, we went on our first date and started on the journey of navigating a long-distance relationship… for two years. Brian was a government employee living in Maryland, busy father and a master’s student at the Naval War College. I, on the other hand, was living the single mid-twenties, broke, grad-student life finishing my masters degree at Loyola University Chicago. Two master’s degrees, two job changes, one big move, and a deployment later, here we are. Some how, we have made it this far….
